It often surprises me how unaware instructional professionals can be about the issues and best practices for ESL students. Many times this relates most to veteran teachers that have spent their careers working with less diverse populations. It can be frustrating to have colleagues that are unaware of the needs of ESL student.

ielts essaynancy johnhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17693074677100549710noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7869493298967938135.post-71307206226401763112014-01-09T09:40:26.036-05:002014-01-09T09:40:26.036-05:00Disagree, or maybe I am missing something here. Y...Disagree, or maybe I am missing something here. You say that teaching English for many is the only option. I honestly beg to differ. I know many adoptees as well as myself, that have successful careers outside the English teaching industry. Isn't what job you apply for a choice? With the amount of information that is currently on the net, I think that it is on the person if they feel like they are being exploited by the English teaching industrial complex. I also believe that many choose Korea because you don't need the teaching credentials that you would in your home country. I highly doubt coming straight out of college at the ripe age of 22 qualify's you to teach (at least not in the US). You have to go some kind of continuing education program to receive the honor to teach. You show me a masters in education, then I can see some validity for your argument. Also coming back to Korea is a choice. In very rare cases are adoptees forced to come back here. I also think that most English teachers are paid well for the service that they provide, and are quite lucky to be employed in the first place. So I guess my question is, why the sense of entitlement? With the growing number of Korean Nationals who study aboard (and speak fluent English) and technology advancements (distance learning) I would worry more about being replaced rather than more pay and benefits.

이요한https://www.blogger.com/profile/11595833311022544386noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7869493298967938135.post-22921629193765259472013-07-31T14:46:02.443-04:002013-07-31T14:46:02.443-04:00All I can say to this is as the AP of two Chinese-...All I can say to this is as the AP of two Chinese-born teenagers, I welcome your thoughts. However, maybe a smaller contingent of progressive, international adoptees and their allies can come together to participate in May Day 2012. As an adoptive mother to a three-year-old from Ethiopia, I am mindful that we came to her as strangers, that she did not know our language. So why is it okay for American families to adopt and do the exact same thing to a child and not okay for a child to endure the same circumstances be returned to his rightful family? It's a double standard that caters to the more affluent and powerful. (And to clarify, when I say "exact same thing" and "the same circumstances" I am speaking ONLY of going to a family he won't at first recognize and a language he currently does not know. I am not saying that it is the same to be reunited to one's family and to be adopted. Quite the opposite situation there, really.)

Anyway, I just found your blog through another that I read and want to also say that I very much appreciate and value your perspective, and I hope that by learning from you and other adoptees that I can better respect and care for my daughter as she navigates life as an adoptee. I know that the situation is far from perfect, and I honestly wish that it hadn't been necessary at all for us to be her parents. I hope that whatever she would like to do as she grows and becomes aware of her own preferences, we will be able to facilitate that, whether it be a return to her home country or anything else. Maybe the language issue topic is an especially sensitive one for me because that's something we haven't been able to figure out how to preserve for our daughter since English is her third language, and we have as of yet been unable to locate someone in our area who speaks her first language.Maryhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09098391747911095350noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7869493298967938135.post-8155019059658685072010-11-13T17:05:41.651-05:002010-11-13T17:05:41.651-05:00Hi, just wanted to let you know that I have repost...Hi, just wanted to let you know that I have reposted this article:

http://angryadoptivemom.blogspot.com/2010/11/allied-pov-international-adoption-and.html

Thanks very much!Third Momhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06310395341252295955noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7869493298967938135.post-51370122997778710772010-10-19T14:55:53.384-04:002010-10-19T14:55:53.384-04:00Thanks very much! Within the community (aka "Indian Country") it's much debated and contentious and "Native" seems actually to be favored but more non-Indians than Indians seem to promote "Native American". I've thought this many time before but haven't necessarily talked with too many others about it. I agree - many of the adoptee social gatherings I've seen are pretty pricey to attend. The 'class' vibe within adoptee groups is definitely a middle/upper class kind of vibe that's a pretty big turn off. etc.

I've also wondered why adoptees aren't active in the comprehensive immigration reform movement. Although I can understand if adoptees don't 'feel' like they had the typical "immigrant experience", adoptees are still affected by immigrataion policies for many reasons(and adoptees have gotten deported too!)

To Margie: I hadn't heard about the FACE legislation but from what you are saying, the arguments backing the leg sound a little troublesome! For transnational adoptees of color, they (we) aren't going to automatically get of being viewed as immigrants just by getting automatic citizenship. I think what adoptive parents are saying sounds pretty misplaced and again avoids the reality of race.Jennahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04524071579661773589noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7869493298967938135.post-57361808599086384692010-05-12T10:25:58.154-04:002010-05-12T10:25:58.154-04:00This is absolutely correct.
