Why is Indian preferred over Native American? Isn't that a term placed on them by colonial invaders as well?
ReplyDeleteYes, but some indigenous people consider "Native American" as a liberal assuage of guilt, plus it's just as much a product of colonialism. Within the community (aka "Indian Country") it's much debated and contentious and "Native" seems actually to be favored but more non-Indians than Indians seem to promote "Native American". This list is also just my personal preferences based on what I've heard and thought about.
